About the Artist

Ellen Anthony - Biography

"I think I’ve always been an artist and didn’t even have a clue."

As a child I rearranged all the doodads on our tables as I did the weekly dusting.  I danced as a ballerina across the living room floor only dreaming of dance lessons.  I wrote “fabulous” (note the quotes) stories for my 4th grade spelling assignments, and created Falling Water houses out of pine straw along a little creek bed in Georgia.  I loved channeling characters for one act plays in high school.  Later on, I chose a Consumer Science & Journalism major for concentration in college without knowing I was pursuing the creative life.  As I look backwards, I clearly see how the artist within kept trying to emerge.

I have recently moved back to my hometown, Dalton, Georgia, after having lived in Louisiana for many years. Before graduating from the University of Georgia with a BS degree, I attended my freshman year at University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. In my professional career I worked as a journalist for newspapers and trade magazines and wrote consumer and public relations materials for the carpet manufacturing industry.  I have also used my talents in a variety of non-profit volunteer activities over the years.

After the big hurricanes of Katrina and Rita that hit the Louisiana coast in 2005, I was inspired to join Gallery by the Lake as a protégé artist.  I found myself frustrated when I wasn't progressing quickly enough so enrolled at McNeese State University in Lake Charles, Louisiana.   I loved studying art history, drawing, and painting with the professors there. I was lucky to be near such a good school while trying to cultivate art production. I was also fortunate to live in a community with so many opportunities to learn from workshop teachers, exhibits, and visiting artists from other parts of this country and the world.

As you look at my work you will find me and my interests everywhere.  I adore giving texture to almost everything which directs my interest in multimedia art.  I love observing birds and find they represent freedom of spirit I admire.  Sand dollars and shells lay bare my longing to be at the beach.  I have even painted the book lady showing my lifelong interest in literature.  But, who knows where some of these images were birthed. As you may see I adore vibrant color and choose to make abstract art just for the pleasure it gives me.

Thank you for coming to my website.  I hope that you can find what you're looking for, whether it's quality art or a chance to connect with me!
